Huawei Launches Pura X Max, First Wide Foldable Phone

Huawei has made a significant leap in the smartphone market with the launch of the Pura X Max in China, marking it as the first wide-style foldable phone available for purchase. This innovative device comes ahead of anticipated offerings from major competitors Apple and Samsung, positioning Huawei as a frontrunner in the emerging design trend of wide foldables.

The Pura X Max offers two versions for consumers, both of which are available for preorder starting today. The standard version is priced at 10,999 yuan (approximately $1,613) for the model with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, while a variant with 512GB of storage is available for 11,999 yuan (around $1,800). For those seeking enhanced specifications, the Pura X Max Collector’s Edition starts at 12,999 yuan (about $1,906) for the 16GB RAM and 512GB storage configuration, and 13,999 yuan (approximately $2,053) for the 16GB RAM and 1TB storage variant.

The standout feature of the Pura X Max is its wide display orientation, which adopts a book-like design rather than the conventional foldable formats. It boasts a 5.4-inch cover display with an impressive peak brightness of 3,500 nits. When opened, the internal display measures 7.7 inches and reaches a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, with both screens supporting a 1–120Hz LTPO adaptive refresh rate for smooth performance.

In terms of hardware, the Pura X Max is powered by Huawei’s in-house Kirin 9030 Pro chipset and is equipped with a robust 5,300mAh battery. The device supports 66W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. The camera system is equally impressive, featuring a triple camera setup that includes a 50-megapixel main camera with a variable aperture, a 50-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 12.5-megapixel ultra-wide camera. The phone operates on Huawei’s latest HarmonyOS 6.1, which supports a variety of AI-driven features, including pose recommendations for photography.

While Huawei has not confirmed the Pura X Max’s international release plans, its early entry into the market poses a potential challenge for competitors like Apple and Samsung. Both companies are reportedly working on their own wide-style foldable phones, with various leaks suggesting we might see a foldable iPhone and a wider version of Samsung's Z Fold. However, these devices are not expected to launch until the latter half of 2026, giving Huawei a significant head start in the foldable smartphone segment.
