At least 694 people have been killed and hundreds injured in an earthquake in Myanmar , with the toll expected to rise. There were also deaths in Thailand. The U.S. Geological Survey said the tremors began around noon local time on Friday. The main quake was followed by several smaller aftershocks measuring between 4.5 and 6.5 on the Richter scale .

The humanitarian crisis resulting from the civil war has raised questions about the current government's ability to deal with this natural disaster. The earthquake destroyed markets, temples and bridges in Myanmar.

Bangkok's high-rise buildings are not built with earthquake-resistant technology. The Thai government said it was coordinating with emergency services in the quake-hit areas.

People left hotels, companies, and hospitals in the heart of the Thai capital and took to the streets in fear and confusion.
